Tips for Choosing a Contractor:
Choosing a paving contractor can be stressful. There are many dishonest tricks that contractors may use. These tricks can sacrifice quality to provide the lowest bid. Not all asphalt is created equal. Here are some tips that can help avoid making a costly mistake.
#1) Compare prices and materials.
This is the most common reason people make a costly mistake. If lowest bid gets the job, there are many contractors that thrive by cutting corners to submit the lowest cost bid. Look for 3-4 bids from reputable companies and compare the materials in the contract. Cheaper doesn’t always mean you are spending your money wisely. You want your investment to last longer, but you also don’t want to spend more than you need to. It is very possible to find a good compromise and your contractor should be willing to meet your specific needs.
#2) Ask around.
Ask friends, family, neighbors and co-workers for contractors that they have had a previous positive experience with. Getting a bargain basement bid from an unknown contractor from the phone book is very risky.
#3) Do your research.
If you must turn to the yellow pages or the internet to find contractors names, do some research on your own. You could contact the BBB & you could ask to talk to past customers of theirs & view the job sites. Ask to see some work that is 3-5 years older, even a poor job can look good when its under a year old. Basic Asphalt Paving lives off of our reputation and word-of-mouth referrals. We do maintenance on work that is 10-15 years old. The paving we do lasts and saves our customers long-term.
#4) Ask questions about the crew and equipment.
Remember, “you get what you pay for” is a very good saying when it comes to asphalt construction. If the low bid is drastically lower than the other bids, something is wrong. There isn’t a lot of markup in asphalt construction & the material prices are usually the same for everyone. Labor rates could vary to some degree, but remember a well paid crew will take more pride & cut less corners than a poorly paid – less experienced worker. A more experienced crew with state of the art equipment & cutting edge methods can complete a quality job in less time & can possibly save you some money on labor costs.
#5) Compare “apples to apples”.
Your reputable bids should all be considerably close in comparison. You can request to see the material receipts after the job to compare the final tonnage to the original estimate. It is very common for dishonest companies to put the asphalt down thin in the middle & thicker on the sides to give a false appearance of a desired thickness. If you were promised 3 inches of compacted asphalt & end up with 2 inches you were cheated out of 1/3 of the stability of your surface.
#6) Watch the contractor work.
We welcome our customers to sit in and watch us work. Your contractor should have nothing to hide during the process. We can show you the pre-compacted depth of the asphalt before it is rolled so you know you’re receiving the quality you expect. Not only is this beneficial to you, but it allows the customer to become comfortable with us. This, in turn, results in word of mouth referrals to family & co-workers in our favor.
#7) Think ahead.
Remember, cutting corners to save money today, will result in significant cost long-term in future repairs & replacement. It is a lot cheaper to do it right the first time, rather than paying for avoidable repairs. Also worth mentioning, is the fact that your surface will look nice over its lifespan, if done correctly, rather than always being in a constant state of repairing & replacing damages due to poor quality construction.
